Request that the agent make copies and give the originals back to you. Once you hand over your original documents, there's a very good chance that they will be misplaced or lost. Stay on point. The auditor will be able to obtain some valuable information in what seem to be simple and friendly discussions. Asking about an expensive new car that you might have purchased, or that vacation to the Greek Isles, might give the auditor reason to believe that you're not reporting all of your income and thus expand the scope of the audit. When you meet with the auditor, in essence, you're providing testimony. So answer as many questions as possible with a simple "yes" or "no" response. If you must expand or explain, keep it brief and very much to the point. Don't give the auditor a reason to expand the audit because of your tendency to ramble on.
Know your rights as a taxpayer. Remember that an audit is like a small trial. It is an adversarial exercise. So while you can disagree without being disagreeable, you must know your rights, the audit process, and the law behind the deductions you are claiming. Settling any difference at the audit level is generally best, but if you can't come to an agreement, you have rights that allow you to request a conference with the IRS Appeals Division.

People: Hasselbeck apologizes to Erin Andrews
Elisabeth Hasselbeck was crying on "The View" Wednesday, and not because she saw Tuesday's heartbreaking episode of "Lost."
Hasselbeck, who spoke tactlessly of Erin Andrews' costumes on "Dancing with the Stars" on Tuesday's "View," tearfully apologized on air Wednesday to the beleaguered ESPN reporter.
A stalker filmed a naked Andrews last year through a hotel room peephole. Hasselbeck snarked Tuesday that the man, since convicted, would have seen "a little bit less — without the prison time" just by watching "Dancing" this season.
How could Hasselbeck say such a thing? Has she even seen that bedsheet Pamela Anderson waltzed in earlier this season?
According to People magazine, a remorseful Hasselbeck confided her error to her 5-year-old daughter, Grace, who replied, "Mommy, why don't you just call Erin and tell her you're sorry?"
"So, thankfully, I listened to her — she's a wise little girl — and I did," Hasselbeck said Wednesday on "The View." "So, I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly too, even though I did follow that advice."

Low levels of eight drugs, including both prescription and over-the counter medications, were found in his system along with marijuana, Harvey said. "But nothing was at a level that would have contributed to his death," Harvey said.

Pettitte day to day with inflamed elbow
Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte was forced to leave his start against the Orioles on Wednesday with what an MRI examination revealed to be mild inflammation of his pitching elbow.
The Yankees said that Pettitte will be treated conservatively and evaluated on a daily basis. Pettitte completed just five innings against Baltimore, hurling 77 pitches, before exiting with a lead and complaining of stiffness in his elbow area. He picked up his fourth victory in the Bombers' 7-5 win.
Pettitte was evaluated at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and, before the results were announced, offered a statement to Yankees director of media relations Jason Zillo.
"First and foremost, it's frustrating," Pettitte said. "You know how much pride I take in going deep into ballgames. Anytime you're talking about the area around the elbow, you start to worry a little bit. I think it's going to be fine, but I'll know a lot more after the MRI results come back."
The 37-year-old Pettitte added that he felt the stiffness was unlike his 2004 injury with the Astros, which required surgery.
"This is nothing like my previous injury with the flexor tendon," he said. "It's a completely different area of the arm. It's nothing like it at all."
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Pettitte felt some stiffness on the top of his left forearm in his April 30 start against the White Sox, and had received treatment then. He also had treatment before Wednesday's start, but the stiffness moved to the back of his arm near the elbow area.
"I think anytime a guy goes for tests, you're somewhat concerned," Girardi said. "The fact that [the stiffness] has moved spots makes me feel a little bit better. It was never in the ligament or the belly of the forearm. ... We'll wait to see what the test says."
Pettitte finally informed Girardi and the coaching staff of the stiffness after the fifth inning, although he did so reluctantly, wanting to stay in the game.
"We had to drag it out of him a little bit," Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland said. "The expression on his face kind of told us the story. We don't want him to push it this early in the season."
Girardi said that Pettitte's command seemed fine, as he walked two and struck out two, an outing that hadn't necessarily raised a red flag.
"We've seen Andy pitch through a lot of aches and pains over his long career," Girardi said.
Eiland said that, as of Wednesday afternoon, Pettitte was to remain in the Yankees' rotation.
"Until we hear otherwise, he's our scheduled [starter]," Eiland said. "We might back his in-between side work off, but we have to wait and see."
With Pettitte's victory Wednesday, Yankees starters improved to 16-4 as a group in 2010. His rotation mates did not seem worried when informed of Pettitte's situation.

Eiland said that, as of Wednesday afternoon, Pettitte was to remain in the Yankees' rotation.
"Until we hear otherwise, he's our scheduled [starter]," Eiland said. "We might back his in-between side work off, but we have to wait and see."
